O'Neil was a student at high-school when she auditioned in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. She made it to the top ten spots because of the judges' excitement in her performances. O'Neil was given high praise by the judges but suffered substantial losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals, when she fell into the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were shocked by the results and encouraged the audience to support those with great singing talent such as Melissa. O'Neil, who had been consistently delivering stellar performances ever since, has never fell below the third place. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil was able to advance to the final two in the contest. Werner said that in the morning, papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil got a call from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on being the winner of Canadian Idol immediately.
